Where silicon meets the soil.
AFarEDGE builds a toolkit that brings advanced electronics, edge AI and secure distributed intelligence out of the lab and into the field giving European farmers accurate, affordable, and connectivity-resilient tools they can actually use.
Bridging the electronics industry and the farm.
The chip and embedded-systems industry has built remarkable technology mostly for cars and factories. Farming has barely tapped it. AFarEdge closes that gap.
Today’s farmers need better awareness and control of what’s happening in their fields and barns. But most agritech tools are too expensive, locked into proprietary systems, or simply not accurate enough and the ones that exist rarely talk to each other or scale to a working farm.
AFarEdge develops a robust, open toolkit that moves intelligence to the edge: agriculture-ready sensing devices, embedded processing, a secure framework for distributing AI across devices, and a shared library of open-source code and datasets. Instead of sending every measurement to the cloud, decisions happen where the data is made on the sensor, the machine, or the drone so systems stay fast, private, and dependable even when connectivity drops.
Crucially, farmers help shape the work from day one.
Through living labs and annual workshops, growers and advisors define the requirements and judge the results, keeping every innovation grounded in real agricultural value rather than lab novelty. The project builds on earlier European efforts (AFarCloud, EdgeAI, AGRARSENSE) and pushes them further toward practical edge use.
Use Case 1: Future crop
REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE: Growing more with less water, fertiliser and pesticide by reading the health of plants and soil far earlier than today’s tools allow; so small problems are caught before they spread.
Use Case 2: Farm work
OUTDOOR EFFICIENCY: Cutting the long hours of outdoor work on bigger and bigger farms by making machines and unmanned vehicles smarter, safer, and able to keep working when the signal drops.
Use Case 3: Animal well-being
WELFARE & MONITORING: Giving farmers reliable, real-time awareness of animal welfare (indoors and out on remote pastures), using non-intrusive sensing and local AI that keeps running on batteries and weak links.
